Thursday Tasting - Oregon Beers

  • Market Street WIne 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

Beer from the Pacific Northwest.

It’s hard to imagine now, but not too long ago, Oregon was craft beer hostile. The Forces of Goodness and Light who wrote their post-Prohibition laws made it so that alcohol manufacture and retail could not take place in the same building. So … no brewpubs. If small breweries wanted to get their beer out there, they needed to either crack Big Brew’s vice grip on grocery stores (wasn’t gonna’ happen) or convince restaurants to surrender one of their few taps to them.

Finally, in 1985 — after their initial attempt was blocked by political opposition funded by threatened beer wholesalers — a collection of early craft brewers snuck language into a bill allowing Bread & Breakfasts to have liquor licenses, and suddenly the dam broke. The Craft Beer industry could begin to grow … and boy, did it!

Today, Oregon has more craft breweries than just a couple of other states. It’s one of those states we think of as “Craft Beer Nirvana.”

This Wednesday, we taste some beers from our favorite Pacific Northwest Brew Producer, Oregon!

This tasting is a free, walk-up tasting. Please join us anytime in the hour and a half.
