Azienda Agricola G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso 2017

Regularly $17.99/On Sale $13.96

There are only a few wines that we have sold continuously and enthusiastically for many, many years, both at the old store and in our newest incarnation, and this is one of them.

G.D. (Giuseppe Domenico) Vajra is a family winery established in 1972 high in the Commune of Barolo. With their first vintage they achieved the first Organic certification in the Piedmont, and have been leaders in non-interventionist farming and winemaking since the 1970s.

Langhe, from an old dialect word for ‘hills’, is a region rich in food and wine history. It is the birthplace of the Slow Food Movement, and is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, the most famous expressions of the Nebbiolo grape. Other terrific grapes grown in the region include Barbera and Dolcetto, and all three of these are present in this Langhe Rosso, as well as the rare Freisa and Albarossa.

When customers ask us for the most immediately friendly and flexible Italian red wine; when they ask for our best Italian value; or when they are seeking an extraordinarily reasonably priced organic wine from a small. family winery, this is almost always our first pick. This is a wine to buy in quantity and drink through the fall.

Giuseppe Domenico’s descendent, Aldo Vajra neatly sums up a view of wine that we share: “In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.” Bring yourself some happiness, and come in and try this wine.
