Thursday Tasting: American Tripel Triple Threat!

  • Market Street Wine 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

Triple Down!

The Tripel is the youngest of the classic Belgian Trappist styles. Born in the early 1930s to compete with the popularity of golden ales that, in turn, were trying to compete with the golden lagers flowing from Bavaria, the Tripel was invented by Hendrik Verlinden of the Brouwerie Drie Linden, a secular brewer who was consulting with the Trappist monks of Westmalle. Westmalle soon followed with their own Tripel, which is, today, regarded by many as the first.

Not in the least because we, too, share a fascination with golden beer, the Tripel is the Trappist style most made by American craft brewers. Some of the earliest craft brewers turned their hands to them, thus, today, you can find some classic ones out there. We’ll have at least one.

This Thursday, we’ll taste a Belgian Tripel and then follow it up with three American Tripels. Please join us for this free walk-up tasting of our Tripel Triple Threat!
