Wine Wednesdays : Wines of Alsace

  • Market Street Wine 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

The Land of French Whites!

France’s Alsace region sits in the country’s northeast corner above Switzerland and next to southwestern Germany. We say, “France’s Alsace region,” but the thing is (as you may know) it’s one of those historical areas of European geographical contention, having gone back and forth between French and German ownership. You can see this history reflected in the wine.

Overwhelmingly producing whites, Alsace is the only French wine region that grows a bunch of Riesling and Gewürztraminer. You’ll also find Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, and varietals of Muscat. Their few reds are mostly Pinot Noir.

Alsace sits between the Vosges mountain range and France’s border with Germany. The Vosges protect the area from western winds and keep area rainfall low. They also help Alsatian wines to be extra refreshing as winemakers get to make them from that fresh mountain water!

Please join us this Wine Wednesday to taste some wines from Alsace. It’s another one of our free walk-up tastings. Please join us any time between 5:00 and 6:30 PM.
