Kisses as Sweet as Wine
The origins of Valentine’s Day are not clear — it being one of those traditions that has evolved over centuries. Somewhere in the deep recesses of time (farther back even than when you still believed in love), there was a Saint Valentine, but who was he, and what did he have to do with hearts, flowers, chocolates, and candlelight wine dinners?
Well, there were three Valentinuses that the Catholic church lists as having been martyred in the 3rd century — apparently all by order of Emperor Claudius II Gothicus, which, we guess, makes him the original Valentine’s Day hater. One story we like is that one of the Valentinuses was in prison for having helped Christians escape imprisonment and torture. There, he fell in love with the warden’s daughter … like you do. Valentinus sent her a love letter signed, “ex tuo Valentinus” or “from your Valentine.” And Boom! The Hallmark Greeting Card Company was born right there on the spot!
Well, whether you’re sick of another testament to Love or are blissfully lovesick, wine is good for what ails you.
