By 2023, do you know which country was the world leader in terms of percentage of surface area dedicated to growing organic grapes? We’ll give you a hint … it’s not any country your could drive to right now if you had a risotto craving.

It was Italy!

According to Nomisma Wine Monitor, by 2023, Italy held 26% of the world’s organically farmed vineyards.

Now, in order to be certified organic in Europe, vineyards must not use any synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organisms. They can use a copper-sulfur mix as a fungicide, and that can be a point of international contention, as the U.S. has a lower allowed sulfur amount than Europe. Still, European organic growers say that their sulfur levels are way below what you find in conventional vineyards.
