Helles Style Lager

From the town of Warwick in New York’s Hudson Valley, The Drowned Lands Brewery sends out this ever-so-appealing Pale Lager. Since the Drowned Lands hops it with Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops, it sounds like the Brook & Reed is a traditional German Helles style Lager. However, it is its own creature.

The malt of this lager really makes it stand out. Slightly sweet, we can’t put our finger on the taste — it’s not bready, not biscuity, not wheaty — we just know it tastes good. Whatever malt they use, the Drowned Lands must use a fair amount of it, because this lager is so rich that you could confuse it for an ale (an experience that is probably helped by the brew being unfiltered). Yet, the Brook & Reed still does not lose its lager crispness.

Have this beer cold but not ice cold to get the most out of its malty goodness.
