White Wine of the Week

Vignerons du Castelas
Le Ballon
Pays de Gard Blanc

Normally $13.99 /
Now on Sale for $11.96
100% Viognier (Gard IGP)

How It’s Made:

Written on the walls of Vignerons du Castelas’ cellar are the words “Moins de vin, mais meilleur.” (Less wine, but better.) From their start in 1952, they’ve been dedicated to making affordable wines from high-quality fruit that has been drenched in the sun of the southern Rhône. For this Viognier, they take their grapes, grown in limestone and clay soils, destem them, and then subject them to a month-long fermentation at cold temperatures. Finally, they age the resultant wine in concrete.

Why We Like It:

This white is yet another entry into a slew of tasty southern Rhône Viogniers that we’ve been lucky enough to encounter. The Le Ballon offers up fresh fruit sitting on a plate of slightly ashy minerality. Tasty and refreshing, get ready for a white that pairs perfectly with gazing into a sunny, blue sky.

Red Wine of the Week

Lupo Meraviglia
Tre de Tre
Puglia Rosso

Normally $16.99 /
Now on Sale for $14.96
Negroamaro, Aglianico, Primitivo (Puglia DOC)

How It’s Made:

Lupo Meraviglia makes this wine from a trio of favorite regional red grapes that they grow in the Salento area of Puglia. They co-ferment them and use the Salasso or “bleeding” technique, which extracts juice from both the must and the skins, delivering a red wine with deeper color and more intensity. They then age the wine for six months in Slavonian oak, allowing it to undergo malolactic fermentation.

Why We Like It:

All of Lupo Meraviglia’s efforts here successfully deliver a smooth, full-bodied, rich red, which drinks like chocolate cherries. Don’t worry. There’s a bit of acid and tannic zing that build on the finish to keep it from being jammy and flabby — a beauty of a deep red.

Beer of the Week

Lagunitas
Maximus

Normally $12.99 / $2.19
Now on Sale for $11.96 (12 oz can)
Double IPA (9.0% ABV)

How It’s Made:

Lagunitas — the people who remember what it was like to make real West Coast IPAs — stays legit with this, their longtime DIPA. Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial hops are in the house (or in the can, if you will).

Why We Like It:

Pouring with an almost syrupy malt backbone, the Maximus is a smooth and rich hop delivery system. Lagunitas says it’s a Double IPA, but we wonder if that’s because they’ve managed to keep the ABV at 9%. It feels like it joyously, mischievously creeps up to the edge of American Barleywine, and we’re more than willing to follow it.
