Red Wine of the Week
Quinta Dona Mafalda
Little Mafalda
Douro Tinto
Normally $15.99 /
Now on Sale for $12.96
100% Touriga Nacional (Douro DOC)
How It’s Made:
Located in northwest Portugal’s Douro wine region, Quinta Dona Mafalda is a longtime port producer. José Teixeira Pinto Vasconcellos started the company in 1879, and, in 2011, Christie’s Port Wine Producer & Shipper, Ltd purchased the company. In addition to their ports, Dona Mafalda also makes non-fortified wines. The Little Mafalda is 100% Touriga Nacional, one of port’s frequent flyer grapes.
Why We Like It:
How often do you get a Touriga Nacional wine that isn’t a port, much less a single varietal version? Here, you get the fullness and richness of the grape with some light tannins around the edges. Sure, you can pair a wine this full-bodied with meals from meaty pastas to barbecue, but it’s so easy-drinking, we’re tempted to just sip it on its own.
White Wine of the Week
Cantina Ottoventi
Punto 8
Normally $15.99 /
Now on Sale for $12.96
100% Grillo (Sicilia DOC)
How It’s Made:
Cantina Ottoventi sits in Erice, a small DOC on the western edge of Sicily, a small mountainous town with a once important medieval tower. Most of the area’s vineyards are located on the upper slopes of Mount Erice. (Ottoventi’s vineyards for this wine’s Grillo grapes sit 450 feet above sea level.) The tradition among Sicilian grape growers who sell to winemakers has been to harvest their grapes at their highest sugar content, because they priced their grapes based on it. However, Ottoventi picks their grapes based on ripeness, favoring a balance between fruit and acidity. They ferment their Grillo in stainless steel, aging their wine in steel as well.
Why We Like It:
That much toted balance is the key to this wine for us. The fruit and the acid make a complete package. Have this wine just a little cool to get the most from its aromatics.
Beer of the Week
Other Half
Broccoli
Normally $23.99 /
Now on Sale for $21.96 (16.9 oz can four-pack)
Double New England Style IPA (7.9% ABV)
How It’s Made:
Brooklyn’s Other Half Brewing Company makes this juicy, hazy, double IPA a hop-splosion! It’s Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe, and Strata, along with Mosaic Cryo and Simcoe Cryo.
Why We Like It:
As if the presence of two cryohops was not enough, they’ve double dry-hopped this sucker so that the aroma jumps out of the can, sits next to you, and asks if you have any pretzels or chips. On the palate, flavors of peach and pineapple burst through the sweet malt with a healthy zest of the finish.
