White Wine of the Week

Weingut Manfred Breit
Riesling
Trocken
Normally $21.99 (1L bottle) /
Now on Sale for $17.96
100% Riesling (Mosel DQ)

How It’s Made:

In 1965, Matthias Breit bought a winery outside of Piesport in west central Germany, not even 20 miles from Luxemberg. Breit then set out to learn how to make wine. After completing his training in 1970, he formally took over the winery, and he, his wife, and their son Manfred set out to make some vino. Today, Manfred sustainably runs the estate, growing their grapes following organic practices.

Why We Like It:

This Riesling is just on the edge of trocken (dry). The small amount of residual sugar allows you to really taste the fruit as it’s caressed by acid. A clear expression of Riesling, this Mosel white is a great brunch wine. It’s also perfect for celebrating early (or false) spring.

Red Wine of the Week

Dal Maso
Cabernet

Normally $15.99 /
Now on Sale for $13.96
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc (Veneto IGT)

How It’s Made:

Though Dal Maso winemaker Nicola Dal Maso enjoys working with local grape varieties the most, he still puts care behind this Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc blend. He pulls the grapes from different parcels in Dal Maso vineyards, grown in clay free grain soil, with medium-high limestone contents. After they de-stem and crush the grapes, Dal Maso leaves them to macerate for seven days in open topped tanks. They then ferment them for 15 days in stainless steel tanks before aging them for three months, also in stainless steel.

Why We Like It:

Many of us don’t think of Italy’s Veneto region for Cabernet Sauvignons. You may wonder what to expect from this one. What happens here is that this red sneaks up on you with how tasty it is. Full-bodied with deep berry fruit that flirts with slight spicy notes, it finishes with soft tannins. This wine was a big hit when people discovered it at a recent tasting.

Beer of the Week

Three Notch’d
Dreamsicle IPA

Normally $14.99 / $3.79
Now on Sale for $13.96 (16.9 oz 4P cans)
New England Style IPA with Vanilla and Orange Peels (7% ABV)

How It’s Made:

The Dreamsicle was a classic popsicle that featured vanilla ice milk dipped in orange sherbet. There’s also the “Orange Creamsicle®,” which is a trademark registered by the Magnum Ice Cream Company (which owns Breyers, Klondike, Good Humor, and Ben & Jerries among others). Their flavor combo is vanilla ice cream dipped in orange sherbet. (The whole “registered trademark” thing is probably the reason why Three Notch’d opted to appropriate the name of the older product.) Regardless, that’s the icy treat that inspired this IPA. (Although there’s also a vodka cocktail called an Orange Creamsicle. Whatever.) What we have here is an NEIPA whose current iteration uses two “orange forward hops” — Mandarina Bavaria and Mosaic — paired with vanilla and orange peels.

Why We Like It:

There are two ways that a candy-inspired beer can go. This way is the way you wish they all would. It’s about seeing how the concept fits in the world of IPA taste. There’s just a hint of the vanilla; it compliments rather than overwhelms, with the orange peels providing a welcome zesty finish. [Chef’s kiss!] Thank you, Three Notch’d.
